And then there were two!
Turns out that Timbers defender
Gavin Wilkinson has been suffering from
lower back pain for the last 3 weeks, asked to be
pulled from the Rochester game and was
hospitalized last week...and obviously
won't play tonight! [Get well soon Gav]
According to
this morning's O article...
General manager Jim Taylor is busy trying to obtain a defender on loan from either a Major League Soccer team or the Premier Development League, or sign a free agent. But in the meantime, others -- such as midfielders Edwin Miranda and Aaran Lines -- will be pressed into defensive roles.
...and there I was, going to make a joke about
Jim Taylor heading up to Nike and trying to trick
Steve Cherundolo or Eddie Pope into signing for Portland
"Hey guys...could I get your autographs...for my young'un...[hands them suspiciously folded piece of paper]...thanks...[evil chuckle]...see you tonight boys!"
Turns out that our
Samba couldn't quite beat the Sounders thanks to 60th minute sub
Brent Whitfield who scored 2 and assisted on Seattle's third as they came from behind to
win 3-1 in Seattle, Renton, Tacoma, Tukwila [delete as applicable].
Turns out that Samba defender
Tommy Hernandez tried out for the Timbers so at least he won't be back to
reap his revenge...we can leave that up to Somoza, Gregor and Sagare now!
[Note: Nice to see
Burpo get a yellow last night for "kicking the ball into the stands before a Salinas Valley free kick"! Claaaaassssy]

Timbers v Montreal this Thursday
The
Montreal Impact stroll into town this Thursday (PGE Park, KO 7pm) as the
only unbeaten team in the USL First Division (5-0-4).
Still
no word on any new signings/loans in the wake of the Heinzen/S. Saunders releases.
Keep your
eyes peeled on Thursday as the
US Mens National Team are
in town training at Nike ahead of the
CONCACAF Gold Cup and I
wouldn't be surprised to see some familiar faces here and there.

Heinzen and S. Saunders Released
In one of those
seemingly seasonal shock release statements the Timbers have announced that
Aaron Heinzen and
Shawn Saunders have been
released by the club.
The Timbers roster now stands at
18 players ahead of their
next game at PGE Park on June 30th against
Montreal.

2005 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
The Timbers 3rd round game will be played at PGE Park on
Tues July 12th against either the
Seattle Sounders or the
Salinas Valley Samba (who play on June 29th).
The Timbers earned a
bye in the first two rounds of the tournament after finishing 2004 as the A-League regular-season champions.
Personally I'd like to see the
Samba rather than
yet another game against the Sounders (familiarity has certainly bred contempt)

It's difficult coming back after a
trip away from timberlog-towers with little good news to update...feel like
selectively erasing my memory and skipping right forward to next week's game against Montreal.
Anyway, here are the main points again...
- Timbers lose in Vancouver in the final minute after coming back from 2 goals down. Edwin Miranda's 30 yd scorcher (something he's been threatening to do for a while) wasn't enough to pull a point out at Swangard.
- Timbers release David Henning and re-sign Garrett Marcum.
- Dizzy Antoniuk then scores twice in the second half to beat the Puerto Rico Islanders 2-1 in Portland
- The Timbers gameus miserabilis as Rochester put 5 past Josh Saunders at PGE Park on Saturday night.
...at times like these we need
more poetry (
on the field as well please Timbers!) so look out for more
Scot Thompson material later in the week.

...and we keep on learning...
...the Timbers
fail to score for the first time this season and
go down 2-0 in Puerto Rico.
...Andy Mac's blog has a
permanent home and will hopefully keep bringing us
inside info from the Timbers camp (like
Aaran Lines picked up a shoulder injury in Puerto Rico...ouch! and Sam Reynolds is an expert in cheerleading!).
...despite a
torrid road-trip the Timbers are still
third overall in the USL 1st division.
...talktimbers very own
mole inside the Oregonian tells the world that
Dennis Peck will be leaving his job as
Sports Editor after the NBA draft (and can it really be true that the Music Editor for the very same paper got
fired for writing the full name of the band [and timberlog fave]
Jackie-O-Motherfucker??!!)
next game in
Vancouver BC on Friday, a place where the Timbers find it notoriously hard to get any points.

We have learned...
So what have we
learned over the past few days?
The headlines "
Rochester: Portland of the East?" can be rolled away and put back in the dusty box under the bed (Rochester 3 - 1 Portland)
Toronto are still winless (Toronto 0 - 1 Portland)
Dizzy has 2 goals from 2 penalties.
Andy MacNamara's blog continues to entertain, and together with
Flickr-ized pictures from the trip and
Allison's ongoing reports the road-trip seems to be heading for the most
interweb covered in the history of US Sports...or something.
Tonight: Portland at Puerto Rico KO 5pm (pacific)
