Soccer the answer to "No Child Left Behind legislation"?

Interesting article in the Trib this morning about the attempts to revive girl's soccer in the City, with John Teuscher, president of the St. Johns Soccer Club, holding tryouts (at noon Sunday at Columbia Park) to develop players who could make Roosevelt, and even Jefferson, competitive in boys and girls soccer.

Teuscher is frustrated that attempts at cooperation between club coaches and varsity coaches often fall on stony ground.

Teuscher also notes that Portland Timbers assistant coach Jimmy Conway, who he knows through the St. Johns Optimist Club, would gladly help Roosevelt girls or boys soccer.

Portland Fans Best?

As the ussoccer.com "Best of..." poll continues, an editorial picks Portland as having the best fans in the US. Although choosing the Rose City seems to have been a way of not offending any MLS teams it's still nice to see Stumptown's fans picked out in this way.

A-League Changes for 2004

Reports surfacing from the USL AGM held last week point to changes for the 2004 A-League season.

New teams in Edmonton and Puerto Rico replace the teams in Cincinnati, Indiana, Pittsburgh, Charlotte and El Paso. The A-League plans to play in two conferences next year with the Timbers most likely meeting old foes such as Milwaukee and Minnesota together with last year's Western division teams Calgary, Vancouver and Seattle with the addition of new boys Edmonton.

Rochester may or may not be part of the Eastern Conference depending on whether they join MLS, a decision which will be made in the next few weeks.

[Other 2004 A-League News]

The A-League season will be: 28 games and will run from Friday, April 16 to Sunday, August 29
